Skokie Birth Records
Skokie birth records are available from two places depending on when the birth took place. The Skokie Health and Human Services Department keeps birth certificates for births that happened in Skokie from 1969 to the present. For births before 1969, you go to the Cook County Clerk in Chicago. This makes Skokie one of the few Cook County communities that has its own local source for recent birth records. With about 66,000 residents, Skokie gives its residents a closer and often cheaper way to get a birth certificate without making the trip downtown.
Skokie Quick Facts
Skokie Health Department Birth Records
The Skokie Health and Human Services Department maintains birth certificates for all births that took place in Skokie from 1969 to the present. This is a local option that most Cook County suburbs do not have. The office is on the lower level of Skokie Village Hall at 5127 Oakton St, Skokie, IL 60077. Call (847) 933-8252 for questions about Skokie birth records.
The fee at the Skokie office is $10 for the first certified copy. Each additional copy is $5. That is less than the $15 that Cook County charges for the first copy. Payment can be made by check or money order payable to "Skokie Health and Human Services Department." The office also accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Discover. Processing takes up to 7 business days. This is not a same-day service like the Cook County walk-in offices, but the lower cost and local convenience make it a good choice for many Skokie residents.

Cook County Birth Records for Skokie
For births in Skokie before 1969, you need to go through the Cook County Clerk. Karen A. Yarbrough is the Cook County Clerk. The office keeps birth records from 1871 to the present for all of Cook County. The main location is at 118 N. Clark St, Room 120, Chicago, IL 60602. There is a walk-in center at 50 W. Washington St on the Pedway Level. The Cook County Clerk also runs a satellite office in Skokie itself, which is convenient for local residents who need an older record.
The Cook County fee is $15 for the first certified copy and $4 for each extra. That is higher than the $10 Skokie charges, but the county office can print records on the spot at their walk-in locations. You need a valid photo ID. Bring the full name and date of birth for the person on the record. For Skokie births from 1969 on, you can use either the Skokie Health Department or the Cook County Clerk. The county has the same records since hospitals file with both the county and the local health department. For pre-1969 births, Cook County is your only local option.
Mail orders go to P.O. Box 641070, Chicago, IL 60664-1070. Include a check or money order for $15, a copy of your ID, and the details of the birth record you need. Phone orders through VitalChek at (866) 252-8974 are another option. VitalChek adds a $12.45 service fee. Either way, the certificate comes to you by mail.
Illinois Birth Records for Skokie
The Illinois Department of Public Health keeps state-level copies of all birth records filed in Illinois from 1916 forward. That includes every Skokie birth from 1916 on. IDPH is at 925 E. Ridgely Ave, Springfield, IL 62702. Call (217) 782-6554 for help. The state fee is $10 for a certified copy and $2 for each extra.
Processing at the state level takes about 12 weeks. That is much slower than either the Skokie Health Department or the Cook County Clerk. Under 410 ILCS 535, the Illinois Vital Records Act sets the rules for who can get a birth certificate and how records must be kept. The state is a good fallback when you cannot find a Skokie birth record at the local or county level, or when you need a search across multiple counties.
Who Can Get Skokie Birth Records
Illinois law limits access to certified birth certificates. The person named on the record can get their own copy. Parents, legal guardians, and authorized legal representatives also qualify. You must show a valid photo ID. This rule applies at the Skokie Health Department, the Cook County Clerk, and the state office. If you need a Skokie birth record for someone else, you may need a court order or a notarized authorization letter from the person on the record.
Older records have different rules. Birth records more than 75 years old are generally open to the public for genealogy and research. That means Skokie birth records from before 1951 can be requested by anyone. Since the Skokie Health Department only has records from 1969 on, genealogy requests for older Skokie birth records go through the Cook County Clerk or the state. The Illinois Association of County Clerks and Recorders has a full directory of county clerk offices across Illinois if you need to search in another county.
Fixing a Skokie Birth Certificate
Errors on a Skokie birth certificate need to be corrected through the Illinois Department of Public Health. Neither the Skokie Health Department nor the Cook County Clerk can change what is on the record. Under 410 ILCS 535/12, IDPH handles all amendments and corrections to vital records across the state.
Common corrections include fixing a misspelled name, adding a father's name after a paternity order, or updating the record after an adoption. You will need supporting documents such as a court order, an affidavit, or other legal proof. Contact IDPH at (217) 782-6554 to find out what forms and paperwork your type of correction requires. Some changes take a few weeks. Others may take several months depending on how complex the issue is.
Note: The Skokie Health Department can help you figure out whether your correction needs to go to the county or the state, even though they cannot make the change themselves.
